The PSL 2026 season began on Thursday night at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore with Lahore Qalandars โ€” the three-time defending champions โ€” asserting their authority with a comprehensive 69-run win over debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen.

Batting first, Lahore posted a strong 199/6, built on Fakhar Zaman's 53 off 39 balls and contributions down the order. Hyderabad Kingsmen, owned by the FKS consortium and coached by Jason Gillespie, were asked a stern question in their very first PSL match.

Captain Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed for 22 as Labuschagne's duel with Shaheen Shah Afridi โ€” one of the pre-tournament talking points โ€” ended in favour of the champion team. Mustafizur Rahman wreaked havoc, as Haris Rauf (2/22) and Shaheen combined to restrict the Kingsmen to just 130.

The match was played behind closed doors in Lahore due to security protocols under Pakistan's national austerity measures. The PSL 2026 features eight franchises for the first time, with Hyderabad and Rawalpindi joining as the two new teams.

Next match: Karachi Kings vs Quetta Gladiators, March 27, 2:00 PM IST at Gaddafi Stadium.
